Transfer Admission Criteria

As a transfer applicant, you will be considered for admission to SUNY Geneseo based on several criteria, which include:

  • Rigor of college coursework completed
  • Appropriateness of the courses in relation to intended major
  • Grade point average in courses related to your intended major
  • Cumulative grade point average
  • Academic Trend–an upward GPA trajectory on a semester-by-semester basis.

Admission as a transfer student is competitive. A minimum GPA of 2.50 is required for consideration.

Programs with Additional Criteria

School of Business

Transfer students interested in the School of Business (SOB) do not need to apply separately in to our SOB.

SOB admission criteria:

  • Students that have earned an A.S. or A.A.S. degree will receive an automatic acceptance.
  • All other students must have a 2.50 or higher for acceptance as an accounting, business administration or economics major.

School of Education

Transfer students interested in the School of Education (SOE) should apply for admission into the SOE at the same time they apply to the college.

SOE admission criteria:

  • College GPA of 2.75+
  • Answer four disposition prompts
  • Applicants (all classifications) who do not satisfy the GPA requirements may be accepted on a waiver basis

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)

If you are interested in transferring into our Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), you must have been enrolled in either an EOP unity Program or its equivalent in your current or previous college studies.

The EOP program is a state-funded initiative designed to provide an alternative means to gain access to college. Its goal is to assist students if their academic achievement was adversely affected by family financial hardship.

In addition to providing access to college, the EOP Program offers the following personal and academic support services:

  • Identification of financial resources to cover college costs
  • A personal advisor whose services are available throughout your undergraduate college career
  • A free, comprehensive tutoring program
  • A workshop series focused on skills needed to succeed in college.

Program Eligibility

  • Applicants must be “previously” EOP at another college. 
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher based upon full-time enrollment for one year for consideration. The strongest transfer candidates will have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or higher. 
  • Applicants must have resided in New York State for at least one year prior to their application for admission and/or completed their last two terms of secondary education in a high school located in New York State. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens and claim to have permanent resident status must be able to provide a copy of their alien registration card (green card). Emancipated applicants must document independence.
  • Applicants must meet specific EOP academic and income eligibility guidelines. For updated income eligibility guidelines, please see SUNY's EOP income guidelines. 

How to Apply to EOP as a Transfer

In order to apply for this program, simply answer "yes" to the EOP question on the application.

Given limited slots, admission priority will be extended to those applicants who are most disadvantaged as defined by New York State EOP guidelines.
