Cost & Financial Aid Overview for New Students
The cost of attending Geneseo may be less than you think after you factor in scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs. Our admissions counselors and financial aid team are always happy to answer your questions, but answers to some common questions are below.
- Is tuition free at Geneseo?
Depending on your situation, you may be able to attend SUNY Geneseo tuition-free.
NYS residents whose family household federal adjusted gross income is $125,000 or less and who complete at least 30 credits per year are eligible for the Excelsior Scholarship, which allows them to attend a SUNY or CUNY college tuition-free.
- What financial aid does Geneseo offer?
Federal, NY State and SUNY grants are available and awarded based on financial need.
Geneseo also has scholarships for new and existing students. Extra funds were added this year to help students with great financial need.
Federal work-study positions are available for those who qualify.

- Can I get loans for meals or housing?
Yes. There are several options to borrow money for tuition and other college expenses.
Low-interest federal loans are the most common loans that students and parents take to help cover the cost of tuition, books, meals, and housing.
You're not required to make payments on federal loans while you're in college at least half time, and once you graduate there are income-based repayment options that mean your monthly payment will be limited to what you can afford.
- How much does Geneseo cost?
Below is the estimated cost of attending Geneseo (per year) as an undergraduate NYS resident living on campus.
Item Cost Tuition $7,070 Fees $1,929 Room Rent $9,702 Meal Plan $6,260 Total Costs $24,961 Note: Cost of attendance is the estimate of direct costs for enrollment as a full-time student. Actual costs may vary depending on living arrangements, meal plan and course load.
You can use our financial aid calculators to estimate how much your first year will cost, you expected family contribution, and what your loan payment might be.
- Do you have a payment plan?
Yes. Geneseo offers a payment plan which allows students or parents to pay their semester bill in installments.
- Who can I talk to about financial aid?
Staff in the Office of Financial Aid are happy to answer any questions you have.
- How do I apply for financial aid?
Fill out the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA). It takes about an hour. Depending on your situation, you'll probably need information from your parent or guardian.
If you want to apply for the NYS Excelsior Scholarship, fill out the Excelsior application as soon as it's available.
You can also contact our admissions team to ask about Geneseo's scholarships, though many are awarded based on application materials and will automatically be offered to you if you qualify.
- When will I find out my aid package?
Once you've been admitted to Geneseo and we have received your Free Application for Federal Financial Aid, your aid package will be calculated.
We plan to begin notifying early action students by the end of February. Regular decision students will generally be notified within 1 week after they are admitted.
When your aid package is ready, you'll receive an award letter in the mail. A few days later, you will also receive an email letting you know that your awards are ready for viewing on your Application Status page. For help on understanding your award letter, check out Understanding Your Financial Aid Awards.
