The CFA Institute is the leading association of investment management professionals, and its CFA designation is globally recognized as a “gold standard” certification, analogous to the CPA in accounting. Each year the Institute sponsors a Research Challenge, in which student teams prepare an original, in-depth piece of sell-side research on a designated publicly traded company. The Challenge is the premier scholastic competition for aspiring equity analysts, and includes an evaluation of the subject company’s operating strategy, a complete financial model and forecast, and multiple valuation studies. The competition also requires a thorough investigation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices.
Geneseo’s second-place finish in the 2022 Western New York regional competition put it ahead of graduate and undergraduate teams from Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and several other SUNY and private colleges. First-place honors went to arch-rival Canisius College. Ever resilient, Geneseo Finance, Accounting and Economics majors are already laying the groundwork for the 2022-23 competition. This year’s team consisted of Economics major Kya Primm, and Accounting Majors Jack Atkinson, Nick Matzelle and Sean McClellan. Kya returns to Geneseo next year as a senior. Sean will pursue a Masters at Notre Dame, and Jack returns to Geneseo as a student in our MS Accounting. Nick will be working in finance, most likely in NYC.
