Students interested in dental or osteopathic medicine now have an opportunity for early admission into medical school thanks to an articulation agreement signed August 18. The three-way agreement creates a seamless, affordable pathway for students who attend Corning Community College (SUNY CCC) and then transfer to SUNY Geneseo, making them eligible for early acceptance into Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM).
“This articulation agreement establishes an important pipeline for students interested in the health sciences,” says Denise A. Battles, SUNY Geneseo president. “It will benefit not only the participating students by helping them reach their educational goals but also the communities they will serve in their roles as health professionals.”
SUNY CCC President William Mullaney concurs that the agreement will benefit both students and their communities. A key goal of the agreement between the three schools is to train and retain local students from the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions.
SUNY Geneseo’s pre-med programs are exemplary. The Association of American Medical Colleges ranks Geneseo 12th in New York State for undergraduate institutions supplying 50 or more applicants to U.S. medical schools in 2020–21. The list lands Geneseo, with 60 applicants, between schools such as Carnegie Mellon University with 61 and Rutgers University with 58, both much larger institutions. With undergraduate research opportunities and faculty mentoring, students not only succeed but excel in their medical school programs, often achieving fellowships.
