Tutoring Services

Tutoring is an integral part of the learning process and AOP has highly accomplished tutors ready to assist you in your learning. Our tutors have taken the same courses, achieving a B+ or higher and have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Students interested in applying to be a tutor must be mature role model and possess an understanding of their unique responsibility as stewards of the AOP support services. Tutorial services are funded by the AOP Department.

Academic Advisement

Academic Advisement and transitioning to the academic rigors of SUNY Geneseo is of the highest priority to the AOP Department. As such, the process of advising students regarding the requirements for academic success is approached in a holistic manner. This process includes, but is not limited to:

  • Transitioning to college
  • Academic planning
  • Academic decision-making
  • Identify options and resources
  • Learning the academic policies and procedures of SUNY Geneseo
  • Making informed decisions

AOP Counselors, in collaboration with the Office of Advising provides direct advisement to all EOP and TRIO students on a regularly scheduled basis.  This advising schedule is established at the beginning of each academic term. AOP Counselors are up to date on all areas of academic development at SUNY Geneseo and work closely with the Office of Advising and department advisors to ensure they are providing the highest levels of advisement.

Every semester, the AOP department ensures our students are aware of important dates on the academic calendar. We ensure students know in advance deadline dates for the declaration of their major(s) as well as important information regarding academic advisement, registration, final exams, and college wide vacation dates.

Ronald E. Mcnair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program

The goal of the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program is to provide academic and support services to prepare students who are first-generation college students from low-income households, or are from underrepresented groups in graduate education for doctoral study in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and other fields.

The SUNY Geneseo McNair Scholars Program encourages the pursuit of doctoral study by providing:

  • Research-intensive experiences
  • Extensive mentoring and support
  • Grant-funded stipends for student research work
  • Opportunities to visit graduate schools
  • Opportunities to attend professional conferences
  • Monetary assistance in support of programs

Becoming a Tutor

All tutors hired by the AOP department must participate in a training program to ensure that they are sensitive to the needs of students with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Training for all tutors, new and returning, is comprised of an online component, and in person mini-training and monthly small group training sessions.
