Fires or Explosions
Fires or Explosions
If you smell smoke or unusual odors suggesting a fire or fire risk, call 911, or, if outdoors, use a Blue Light Phone.
In Case of Fire
- Activate the building's nearest alarm pull box.
- IMMEDIATELY evacuate all rooms and close doors. Do not lock doors.
- An alarm indicates an emergency. Walk quickly to the nearest exit stairways and alert others to do the same. Do NOT stop for personal belongings or records.
- If possible, assist any person with a disability in exiting the building. Do NOT use elevators. Smoke is the greatest danger in a fire: stay near the floor where the air is less toxic.
- Once outside, move to a clear area at least 200 yards away from the affected building at the designated meeting location. Keep streets, fire lanes, hydrants and walkways clear.
- Keep clear of any Command Post set up near the scene unless you have official business.
- DO NOT RETURN TO AN EVACUATED BUILDING until authorized by a College official.
Remember
- If you or someone else is on fire: stop, drop and roll.
- Always know two escape routes.
- If you become trapped during a fire, place an article of clothing (shirt, coat, etc.) outside a window as a marker for rescue officials.
- If no window is available, stay low to the ground where the air is less toxic and shout at regular intervals to alert rescue crews to your location.
- DON'T PANIC.
