Philosophy Course Offerings

The Department of Philosophy offers a wide range of courses and topics, most higher-level courses are small, so faculty members get to know each student and can actively guide their development. For the 2022-23 academic year, the average class size for all upper-level (300-400 level) philosophy classes was 14. Meanwhile, (excluding PHIL 237, which almost exclusively serves Business students), our 200 level courses averaged 23 students for 2022-23, with more than 50% of these courses under 20 students.

 

What's Happening in Our Courses?

NEW EXPERIMENTAL COURSE FOR FALL 2023:  PHIL 288 Exp Technology & Ethics

This course will investigate how we evaluate and respond to technology and will examine technology's impact on such values as freedom, individuality, growth, work, and the political process. Ethical issues raised might include: questions of profit in business; biotechnology; social media; free speech, misinformation, and democracy; surveillance; AI; and algorithmic bias. 

Students who are interested in careers in STEM, medicine, business, digital technology, social media, security, or politics/government might be especially interested in the course.

Charitable Giving Project in PHIL 130 (Spring 2023)

PHIL 130 engaged took up the topic of Effective Altruism in a hands-on manner with students working in groups to direct actual funds to real-world charities of their choice. In the end, $1800 (provided through the Geneseo Foundation and other donors) was donated to Partners in Health, a global charity working toward healthcare equity and justice.
