Spring 2025 List of Elective Courses (for Minors/Concentrators) and Distribution Courses (for Majors)

For Minors and Concentrators: Non-WGST prefix courses play the role of electives. Concentrators must select at least one course from humanities/arts and one from social science. Minors must select electives from at least two prefixes. Contact the WGST Coordinator (Amanda Roth, rothal@geneseo.edu) for advising or more information.

For Majors: For non-WGST prefix courses, note the distribution area the courses can apply to below each course. Seek advising from the coordinator (Amanda Roth, rothal@geneseo.edu) or your academic advisor about choosing among options for distribution areas where possible. In some cases, there may be additional possibilities for distribution areas for a course depending on the particular course material, but I have listed those that are most obvious given the title of the course.

* Prerequisites apply

Note:

  • Note that many courses on the list have prerequisites. If you do not meet the prerequisite, you may contact the instructor and inquire about whether you could take the course for WGST purposes without having the prereq. (Though in some cases the answer will be "no".)
  • Also, in some cases, the above courses devote only a portion (usually about 30% or more) of the course material to gender and/or sexuality specifically, but many allow students to make choices about the focus of one or more assignments. If you are using a course in another program or department for WGST credit and the course has only partial focus on women, gender, and/or sexuality, then you should opt to focus a major assignment on one of those topics when possible.
  • Finally, in some cases, there are upper-level courses offered in other departments that are generally only available to majors, minors, or students with significant background in the relevant disciplinary areas. Those courses usually will not show up on this list; however, if you are a student who has the relevant background and you are taking a course not on this list that you believe has significant women/gender/sexuality-related content, please feel free to contact the WGST coordinator (rothal@geneseo.edu) to discuss.
