Program Goals

The Program Goals for the department represent our overarching goals for the math major.

Goal 1:  Students will learn the fundamental principles underlying the major areas of mathematics.

Goal 2:  Students will develop and utilize effective written and oral communication skills in a mathematical setting.

Goal 3:  Students will develop an in depth understanding of an area of mathematics through a selection of appropriately recommended coursework.

Goal 4:  Students will develop a broad appreciation for mathematics both as a discipline and as a tool for solving real world problems.

Goal 5:  Students will be able to write and critique mathematical proofs.

Goal 6:  Students will be prepared to use mathematics and related technology in their careers or their graduate study.

Program Learning Outcomes

The Program Learning Outcomes for the department represent the specific department/program learning outcomes for the math major.

  1. Students will be able to analyze problems and formulate appropriate mathematical models in a variety of areas of Mathematics.

  2. Students will be able to select and utilize appropriate mathematical technology with which to analyze mathematical problems in a wide variety of areas.

  3. Students will be able to make rigorous mathematical arguments including how to both prove and disprove conjectures.

  4. Students will critically read mathematics. 

  5. Students will be able to use the concepts of Analysis in solving problems. The fundamental concepts include sets, numbers, functions, and convergence. 

  6. Students will be able to use the concepts of Algebra in solving problems. The fundamental concepts include equations, numbers, and algebraic structures.

  7. Students will be able to express themselves in writing in an articulate, sound and well-organized fashion.

  8. Students will be able to express themselves orally in an articulate, sound and well-organized fashion.
